ActionScript 3 Reference for iPhone

with 64 comments

The iTunes app store has just approved my first application, and has posted it online. The application is an ActionScript 3 class reference for the iPhone and allows quick and easy access to the ActionScript 3 class reference docs for Flash Player 10, AIR 1.5, and Flex 3.2.

About Screen Filtering Classes API Doc

You can find more information on the application, view screenshots and log feature requests on the application’s home page. You can install the application directly from the iTunes app store from here.

Special thanks to De Monsters who put together the graphics and icons for the app.

  5. Indeed, nice job.

You got me unnecessarily excited there for a second, though. When I read your headline, I immediately thought to myself: “They finally got Flash working on the iPhone!”

  6. Nice… but why? Really – what is the point of this app? When should I use it? When I do some AS3 coding and don’t have internet access on my PC but have internet access on my iPhone?
Please explain us what is the point.

If you dont know why you would need this, then you probably dont need it.

For me, I travel a lot, and it is useful to have local docs, especially when my connection might be slow or non-existent.

I will never understand why people feel the need to take the time to leave comments that they don’t need / want or care about something. If you dont need / want it, dont use it.

  17. Downloaded, works as advertised. My only suggestions might be to offer options to filter by AS3, Flex, and AIR-specific classes. Being able to drill down by package would also make things handier if you don’t know the name of the class, but know it’s in a certain package.

But hey, it’s free so I can’t really complain too much. ;)

Maybe its apple, but if you have restricted the app to certain stores (I have not uploaded any apps myself, so I dont know the facts) please include the danish app-store?

  24. “I will never understand why people feel the need to take the time to leave comments that they don’t need / want or care about something. If you dont need / want it, dont use it.”

Really? You only want comments where people agree with you, or say that great? A comment is a comment, bad or good.

IMO its good that people have different opinions and that they feel able to voice them.

I think you explained your need for it clearly which meant it was worth the guy asking the question (although I think its a bit week being anonymous).

  25. Nice app, albeit somewhat a limited first version. I’d like to see better formatting of the pages, so I don’t have to zoom in and out all the time or scroll sideways too much. Pinching and flicking is really great on the iPhone of course, when you’re scrubbing or doing a demo of the phone, but it sucks for reading longer articles imo.

It’d be sweet if you could jump between different kinds of members, like properties, events and methods. Someone’s suggestion of filtering as3/flex/air classes sounded really nice too.

But all in all, great work, definately a keeper.

When I’m on my laptop, I use the online help. Other times, I’m away from my laptop – perhaps on a train or a plane – and I want to look things up, maybe because I am planning an app in my head. Other times I just want to browse and see if there’s anything I could be using that I don’t know about. Sometimes I just want to learn. For all those things, it is extremely useful. It is always in my pocket and takes up zero space over and above what I would already be carrying. That is the point. It’s priceless.

Don’t look in to it. I tried earlier from my iPhone and left a comment. Now back on my mac there was a new agreement from Apple in iTunes that I should verify – and then I was directed from the us-store to the danish store. So I guess it was a account-problem of something?! Whatever, I’m transferring to my iPhone this minute – thanks! (and I hope you didnt waste time on me…)

  34. the big advantage i see with this app is the search bar. start type your class name and it brings you right there. in the original html docs you always have to scour through the list to find it which is really annoying.

might be even better if the search bar always stays on top and doesn’t scroll with the class list.

  44. This is great… you know what would be even better? If there was an equivalent of that app as a downloadable app for the mac. It’s always baffled me that there is no searchable, downloadable set of API docs for Flex… Surely it can’t be too hard to build a version of this that runs locally on a Mac?

Thanks in any case! It’s better than having to be connected all the time, for sure.

  46. Thanks, Mike. I was able to use this while at lunch, where I didn’t have my laptop, and there wasn’t a Wifi. We were talking about a bug, and brainstorming some options. In seconds, I had the class name I was thinking of.

I’m learning to do iPhone apps right now, and it was nice to see an example of a reference. Regardless of what you add to this app or not, I appreciate the effort you had to do it. Well done!

  49. Thanks for putting this together, Mike. It has already been helpful to me and it’s much appreciated.

By the way, if you decide to break down the information into AIR, Flash & Flex subsections, and/or if you decide to reformat the information so it’s a bit easier to read on an iPhone/Touch, I’ll make no effort to convince you otherwise. ;)

But even if you decide to never touch the thing again I am still very grateful.

    Thank you, sir!

  59. I can’t for the life of me see the use for this. Who the hell wan’t to read a reference document on the GayPhone?

I mean the screen i smaller than my hand, it must physically hurt you to read that kind of text on such a small device. Or is the ActionScript refernece not that complex that I am used to?

Would I as a developer when in need of consultation
prefer to use the applePhone to search (with an inferior keyboard) the reference, rather than alt-tabing on my the actual PC I am developing on to the reference and search? I see that as an annoying distraction…

    I dont understand?

Pointless app for a pointless “phone” (with the amaizing cut-n-paste feature, wow).

P.S Yes I read the other comment, but the answer just tells me that the poster can’t justify why.

  61. nice app, works well.

I did find one bug to your app though, which I bet doesn’t really bother you. The title header of the class doesn’t get updated if you are redirected from a link within another class… I get lost sometimes when I move down the object chain.

    Besides that, thanks!

  62. I could see using this when I’m on my laptop but offline, which comes up from time to time. Even if I am online, it’s one less window I’d have to have open when working on a limited-size laptop monitor.

Also – sometimes I’m having discussions about AS3 with other programmers while I’m not even at a computer.
