Thanks for the above post,
Its all working very fine, but I have found some problems using gears with Windows Mobile.
Gears is not for Windows Mobile 6.5 also I have some caching issues were with MSIE6 and later versions.

You say "the implementation can be though of as a small web server". Can Gears actually be set up as a small web server so that client machines networked to the device running Gears run off the local version.
i.e. Could this be used as an alternative to a LAMP/WAMP environment?

I encountered a problem and I hope you can help me. I am getting an error while calling checkForUpdate, but I don't know why. What can it be? Thank you so much.

Nice thoughts Mike.

Tristan. We don't offer a nice isOffline method, so you have to implement this yourself. The common approach is to ping a URL that is part of your app with a timeout. Dojo Offline (which uses Gears) gives you this API.

I would personally love something built-in, but there are sacrifices too.

Cheers,

Dion

Does this mean that google reader is "faking" their online/offline modes?

When you rollover the little up/down arrow in the top right corner, it presents you with a tool tip saying "Currently online: click to go offline" and vise-versa.
