Firefox 3 Will Break some Flash content
Just a quick note, but it looks like a bug in Firefox 3 (soon to be released) will break some existing Flash content. Specifically, it looks like it breaks onKeyUp events in Flash.
You can find more info, and view the bug here.
Unfortunately, it does not look like they will fix this for the 3.0 release, but may fix it in the first 3.0 update.
UPDATE : Mozilla decided to fix the issue (woot!), and has posted a new build. Make sure to check out the build and test your content.

Mike,
Can you confirm that the bug only affects Firefox 3 in Mac OS X and not the Windows version?

Interesting, they won’t hold up on fixing this.. seems like it would cause some great issues for good old Firefox.
.. but on the flip-side even FF3 still crashes/sucks on mac.. so maybe it won’t be a problem.

Shouldn’t everyone comment on the bug to try to get it upgraded to a blocker?

Yes. I should have been clearer in my original post. This is on OS X.

Maybe a squeaky wheel gets the grease tact might work here. Encourage people to comment to get a fix. :) I learnt from watching the Make some noise campaign with Adobe.

This would be a nice article to appear at Digg.com.
Maybe it would help to bug to be corrected before Firefox being shipped…

From wading through the bug report, it sounds like they identified the previous bugfix that introduced this bug, and backed out that bugfix, so this issue is supposed to be resolved in release candidate 2.

Digg it? Seriously? My friend put it well:
“So, FF3, AS3, Mac OS. In other words, nobody. ;)”

Actually I would venture to guess more like 3% to 4% of the market.

[...] Mike Chambers, a web evangelist for Adobe notes a bug in the next version of Firefox. While the problem was resolved, it got me thinking about how important Flash technology is to companies building web browsing applications. It seems as soon as Mozilla realized the bug was there, they immediately took care of it. Its fascinating how prominent the Flash player is on web browsers, I don’t think people realize how often they might view Flash content on the Internet. Firefox was smart in dealing with the issue before the official release of Firefox 3. addthis_url = ‘http%3A%2F%2Fmw2006.edublogs.org%2F2008%2F06%2F01%2Fflash-player-and-new-browsers%2F’; addthis_title = ‘Flash+player+and+new+Browsers’; addthis_pub = ”; [...]

Has anyone come up with any work arounds? We’ve downloaded the RC3 of Firefox3 for OS X and we’ve primarily seen a bug in our sites that use SWFAddress for deep linking (http://www.asual.com/swfaddress/).
Right now, when our sites change the URL in the address bar, the flash site will flicker on and off… a quite distressing issue

I just downloaded Firefox, and I don’t know much about it other then it works better the IE, found out from a friend. Anyhow i’m using windows XP with Firefox, and it’s not letting me play any flash. I go to Youtube to watch a video, and it’s not working. Then, it says I need the newer flash program, and it won’t let me install, saying I needed to close FF3 before it could. I’m pretty bad at fixing problems, if someone could help me out step by step, that would be nice.

[...] This was confirmed on a MacBook Pro with the same. We checked a MacBook with Leopard and Flash Player 9 and the problem did not exist. It also did not exist on my machine under the latest Flash Player 9. If anyone has additional insight into this that would be great! Looks like it is mainly a Flash Player 10b issue though red flags were raised based on the previous bug related to Flash and Firefox 3. [...]

I have same issue. I am actually pretty good at fixing problems but could not get Flash to install into FF3 with WinXP either. I uninstalled previous version of Flash and manually installed new Flash. No go. Sounds like a pretty serious bug in FF3. I was using FF2 for a long time with Flash with no issue. All problems began with FF3 install a couple of days ago.

I am having problems with some Flash sites I use since installing FF3 on WinXP.
You can call me paranoid, but I think Mozilla is trying to make Flash a pain to use, in an effort to kill it.
Look at the issues that are occurring with this new version, they are talking about adding any Flash version below 9.0.128 to the block list, and recommending ‘Flash Blocker’ as a must have plug-in. FF doesn’t have market share yet, but it is growing, and they don’t seem to be Flash friendly.
Just a thought.

Only thing you have to do is to CLEAR manually the catch data of FF3 when it starts making problems with flash. I have XP, so the location of catch:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\3chp1vze.default\Cache
So clear this directory… I hope they will fix this bug soon.

I’m using FF3 in WinXPpro and it does not display any flash content. I’m using the IE tab plugin until they fix this thing.
