Central Update Article / New Screenshot

with 9 comments

The Macromedia DevNet center just published an article that I wrote that gives an update on the status of Macromedia Central.

The main points?

  • Release has been moved from end of summer to this fall
  • We have been fixing bugs, doing usability tests, and adding features.
  • We will be having a public developer beta within the next month.

The article also shows some new screens of the new ToolTips, and Blast! feature (which allows applications to share data with each other).

You can view the entire article here.

We have also released a new screen shot to our beta. You can view the shot here.

If you have any questions about Central, the article or new screenshot, you can post them in the comments, or in the Central web forum.

  1. What is the reasoning behind basing Central around the Flash 6 player?

  2. Well, the main reason is that we started development way before the Flash 7 player was in any state to use.

If we would have included Flash 7 player, development would have been more difficult as we would have to incorprate changes to the Flash 7 code base, as well as our own changes and optimizations that we are adding.

Also, I would think of Central as being on Flash Player 6++, as we have added a lot of the performance optimizations from the Flash 7 player, as well as a number of other features and APIs (tooltips, web services API, dynamically loading progressive jpgs and gifs, etc…).

    hope that helps…

  3. Thanks.

Really, Player 6.0.79 has a lot in common with 7.0 and those add-ons are really cool. It would be nice though to have access to features like PrintJob, ContextMenu and so on. If those features are already part of Central then it isn’t much different from FP7 anyway…

The only problem then would be that you couldn’t use a swf7 in Central. That’s a little bit annoying if you wanted to re-use parts of an app in Central and in an ordinary online version.

  4. fyi, we also have improved / enhanced printing support.

We don’t have support for the context menu (yet).

  5. What do you guys think about the new Macroedia 2003 / 7. I like the fact that Fireworks is built directly into to Dreamweaver.

  6. Looking forward to Central. Hopefully the final RC will be stable enough for me to use.

  9. Above, Mike Chambers mentions enhanced printing support in Central. Does anyone knows what he is referring to, specfically? I haven’t found any mention of printing in the Central SDK or online….
