Flash Based Google Search App
Josh Dura and and I have been playing around with the Google Web Service API. We have put together a simple Flash based application that allows you to search google. It is not 100% complete, but we though we would post it to let people check out (and hopefully give us some ideas for features).
The application uses the GoogleService ActionScript Library, components from DRK 3, and Flash Remoting.
Update [May, 5 2003] : A new version of the application was uploaded. You can see a list of changes here.
You can view the on-line docs for the Tab, TextField and Slider components here.
You can find more information about the Flash UI Component Set 5 (which contain the Tab, TextField and Slider components) here.
You can find more information about DRK 3 here.

this is so cool!!!
cant we have an option where we can launch the result in a new window…?
also… the components are the FUI components Set 1 or some other…they are really nice…!

>cant we have an option where we can launch the result in a new window…?
Yes. I will add that.
>the components are the FUI components Set 1 or some other…they are really nice…!
Most (tab, TextField, Slider) are from the Flash UI Component Set 5, which is available on DRK 3:

They have been reskinned.

If you search for the same thing more than once, the ‘previous searches’ box shows duplicates. It would be nice for duplicates to be removed.
Great job!

Great application!!!
Although there are some problems with the application (with keboard-tabbing):
When I try to tab with the keyboard between the tabs in the component, the focusRect of the tab component is very small and is above the tabs.
Same thing with the Slider on “Settings” tab – when I keyboard-tab to it, the focusRect is small and at the top of the slider. Is this a known bug?
And one more thing – I suggest you change the tabIndex of the different MCs to be correct.
And again – great application!!!

Good catch on the tab indexing. I forgot to set them.

Very cool indeed. I especially liked how you included the “search in domain” option so that you could easily use this to search your own site.
SLICK! is the best word I can think for this.

Geeky Google
Ok, I need to be a geek for a minute and say that this is pretty damn cool. I’m not thinking about for hitting directly against Google for a broad search. It’s quicker just to use my Google Toolbar. But

Lets say I have a flash site. Why would I make someone go to another site when they can run the search directly from my site. I want to keep them ‘here’ as long as possible, not create popup windows and the like.

Also, there is a ton of extra stuff you can do that makes it more usable and adds functionality.
For example, I am considering making it where you can easily refine search results, based on existing results. This is possible in google, but it requires that you reload a page every time you want to refine the search.
Using flash, you can just load the data (and not refresh the entire interface), and have a visual breadcrumb trail of the searches that got you to where you are (which each breadcrumb caching the results for that search).
Of course, there is tons more stuff you could do…

Why do I have to click the search button after typing a text……I think it should work with enter button also.
Anyway, as always, gr8 job Mike, when can we have a look at the source files??

Interesting that the components are reskinned to match HALO. Will we see FLA samples or documentation on implementing the HALO look’n'feel in our own apps? You know, for a consistent user experience and all… it would help in the transition to MM Central.

Nice job making it look like a real google object.
Please add image search, image zooming, and natzke-style flip carousels! :]
Will you make your DRK component skins available?

Have you seen http://www.kartoo.com/ – uses Flash and search engine data to visually represent the connections and relationships between data from different sites and topics.

Hey pretty cool there guys
Just on thought, do you have the option to bring back the short description with the google API – I’ve not really explored it much.
It would be neat to have the title, description and domain come back … or give the user the choice to have that or just the name and link as you have here.

Ill add an option for that. I will be posting a new version in the next day or two.

A open link in new window check box would be cool.
And when you search on the regular html page it gives you a suggestion for an alternative spelling, i.e wide screen it may suggest widescreen…I’d like to see that brought into this too.

Really good to see Flash doing all the work of HTML & Better. Thanks to the community.

If I press Alt+Tab, while focus is on the flash object and then return back to this page… focus is lost and not set until I click on the swf object. Is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks,
